Chief Executive Officer
Reflecting on my first year at Stanford Health Care, I am more optimistic than ever about the future of our organization, and our extraordinary nursing team lies at the heart of that confidence. I gained an especially strong appreciation for the critical role of nurses following my own experience as a patient, when a biking accident put me in the ICU with a traumatic brain injury. The nursing staff served as incredible advocates for me – just as you do for the patients you treat here each day at SHC. Your leadership and commitment are deeply valued, and I cannot overstate the importance of your contributions as we prepare for new opportunities and challenges ahead.
The face of health care is changing rapidly. By 2020, more than 20 percent of Americans will be over the age of 65, and those over 85 now represent our country’s fastest growing age group. These are individuals with complex health needs who will require an unprecedented level of care coordination to not only manage disease when it strikes but prevent it from happening in the first place. Our nurses, who touch virtually every aspect of care delivery, are uniquely positioned to lead this effort at SHC. By advancing preventive care that is team-based, compassionate, and personalized to the individual, nursing will continue to have a profound effect on the health of our patients.
In keeping with the theme of change, there are many exciting developments in store for SHC. We are building a revolutionary new hospital facility, set to open in 2019, which will offer the most advanced Precision Health approaches for our patients. We are also on the cusp of finalizing an Integrated Strategic Plan that will align the priorities of Stanford Health Care, Stanford School of Medicine, and Stanford Children’s Health – laying a foundation for Stanford Medicine’s next 20 years.
From designing the workflows that will underpin our new facility, to participating in numerous forums that have helped shape our new strategic direction, your voice continues to play an essential part in our future. Thank you for all that you do.
